I heard about this method of seed sowing from permaculture expert, Dr Christy Garner last year when she was part of my online Your Garden Apothecary class. I love that it works with nature and can produce stronger, more resilient seedlings. It’s also a great way to re-use for those hard plastic clamshells and bottles.
Your local garden center probably has a pretty good selection of seeds, particularly the culinary herbs and better-known medicinals like chamomile. It you’d like to grow some more unusual herbs, there’s an incredible selection of seeds and starts at Strictly Medicinal Seeds in the US, or check out Jekka’s Herb Farm in the UK.
Winter sowing works for a lot of herbs, but if you are growing something from tropical climes and your climate is cooler, it’s better to start them indoors with heat and a grow light.
Growing your own herbal remedies is a great way to support your and your family’s health. It’s also rewarding, cost-effective and fun. I hope you’ll consider growing a few medicinal herbs this summer.
